Drama Studies

If there’s a person who can pretend to be anyone, or someone, that would be the dramatists or artists. Today, drama is commonly seen on shows aired in different channels via television.

Drama came from the greek word “action.” Through its presentations it can make audiences laugh, cry, feel entertained, or shocked. The aim of this art was to afflict its audience emotionally, through enacting a literary piece into life.

Formerly, this art was performed by thespians in a stage, while audiences sit back and watch them perform. Such drama performances are a mixture of both production and literary skills. In its early years, dramas came from novels, or books that were read on by audiences --that was later on put into acting to give it a touch of realism.

Two major forms of Drama were Tragedies and Comedies. Best dramas of the early Modern Era, was Hamlet (1601) by Shakespeare and Oedipus the King by Sophocles. Through lyrical or poetic approach of story writing, the said drama touched the commoners of that time, about the resentful life of royalties.

Today, dramas are commonly seen and heard in television soap operas, films, or radio dramas. Media played a role on the popularity of drama, and scriptwriters became the new fad; teaming up with literary writers.

Scriptwriters make each scene fit for a show, while removing the traditional way of writing, and shifting to a more natural one. After finalizing the scripts it will be sent to a director who would, sort the scenes for revision.

Then it will be forwarded to Cinematographers; Radio Editors; or Theater directors who will layout proper positioning, placement or blocking on presentations.

Students who would want to take this major should have an interest in writing, acting singing, and dancing. Studying drama can help students improve their improvisation skills and understanding of the society’s values.

This also enhances teamwork and participation. Building rapport or bonding helps students explore relationships with their classmates on and off stage, and is sure to gain you lots of friends in the campus.

In classes, expect more play making. All students are obliged to join or participate in both stage and backstage tasks.

Studying drama doesn’t just improve your knowledge about the craft, but has personal benefits too. Learning this craft enhances interpersonal skills and self-confidence. Being in this field will make you mindful about your physique; as you will be facing lots of people-- that help students overcome their shyness.

Aside from improving self-esteem, studying this major will help students understand culture, and racial differences more. Students will become more aware of ethics, and they will know what is morally correct and incorrect through several activities and lessons, that makes students familiar on both western and oriental dramas.

Career opportunities for students who aim to take the Drama Studies Major, are theater actor/actress, Dramatist, Radio Drama talents, Scriptwriters, Theater Directors, and other backstage and on stage related works that involves set designing, props making, and even styling of actors/actresses, to follow a certain theme set for the performance.
