Creative Arts

Remember the English rock band Beatles and the icon of martial arts cinema in the person of Bruce Lee? As a group, the Beatles was the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed in the history of popular music, while Bruce Lee was a key figure of modern popular visual culture. Popular music and visual culture are among the subject areas in the study of Creative Arts.

Authorities say that Creative Arts refers to multi-disciplinary forms of creative expression, or to the study of creating and performing works of art, music, dance and drama. This includes the communication of messages in various forms of media.

In many institutions of higher learning, Creative Arts as a program of study is offered under a separate department or college that awards certificates, and both baccalaureate and Master’s degrees to students upon completion of the course. The most common areas of study in the program include Art History, Graphic Design and Illustration, Sculpture, Painting, Printmaking, Film and Media, Music, Visual Arts, Cartooning, Drama, Performing Arts, Animation and Fine Arts. A university catering solely to the creative arts offers courses in Advertising, Computer Games and Digital Art, Architecture and Interior Design, Design for Theater, Performance and Events, Journalism, Broadcasting and Music Production, Marketing and Management, Photography and Media Arts.

A major of Art History enables students to study the objects considered to be art in various times and cultures, and takes them to the field of Popular Music Techniques where the Beatles excelled in the 1960s, or to the Asian Visual Cultures up to, and beyond the time of legendary Chinese-American actor and martial arts luminary Bruce Lee. The other courses of study include Music in the Digital Age, Electronic Music, Music in Film and Television, Creative Thought and Practice, and Reflection of Creative Practice. All these programs are designed to provide students with opportunities to gain professional skills needed for various Creative Arts careers.

The aims of Creative Arts programs do not differ much from one institution to another. Such programs agree not only on preparing students to become innovative thinkers and skilled communicators but to introduce them as well to the interpretation of creative works and develop in them an understanding of creativity that can create good art essential in enriching the lives, strengthening certain communities and improving the health and welfare of the people in such communities.

Since creativity knows no limit, there is also no limit to job opportunities for graduates of Creative Arts programs. Surveys by some Creative Arts schools have indicated that their graduates easily land high-paying jobs in publishing and editing, writing, arts criticism, scriptwriting, government departments, film and multi-media production houses, theater companies, arts and cultural industry publishers, schools, museums, galleries, libraries, cinemas, and television and radio networks. They can also work as advertising or account manager in an advertising company, animator, architect, computer games designer, exhibition designer, filmmaker, producer or director, graphic or interior designer, illustrator, tri-media journalist, photographer, theater and film set designer, and many other arts-related jobs.
