Gastronomy in Bermuda

Cuisine in the country was influenced by American and English cuisine. The country’s food is based on vegetables, fish and exotic fruits. They use wine, brandy, and other alcohol to add flavor, if needed.

Bermudian well-liked appetizer is Shark hash prepared from pounded shark meat sautéed with seasonings and typically served on toast.

Common breakfast of the Bermudians include pizza (made of low-fat cheddar cheese, pizza crust mix, egg white, milk, hash browns, salt, black pepper and low-fat breakfast sausage), casserole (ingredients are milk, eggs, shredded cheddar cheese, ground pork breakfast sausage, frozen potato rounds, condensed cream of mushroom soup and piece mushrooms, drained), tacos (made of eggs or hash browns or leftover meat, chopped cilantro, flour tortillas, salsa and shredded cheese), Polenta with salt codfish (ingredients are salted boneless codfish, olive oil, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, grated cheese, dried basil, polenta and solid-pack tomatoes, drained) and bean soup (made from imported beans).

Fish is used as one of the primary ingredients in several dishes like fish chowder (Bermuda’s national dish), pan fried fish, codfish and potato and Peas 'n' Rice or Hop 'n' John. Desserts that are popular in the country are the syllabub (made with guava jelly, sherry and thick cream), cassava pie and fresh fruits (bananas, guavas, avocados, Surinam cherries and strawberries), Johnny cake (cooked with cornmeal bread) and banana crumble.

Some of the beverages in the country are rum (popular rum are bacardi, demerara and rum swizzle), dark and Stormy (made with ginger beer and black rum), loquat liqueur (prepared with gin, rock candy, loquats and spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves), Shandy (made from imported lager beer and lemonade), Shrub (made from lemons, oranges, and rum liqueur) and tea.
