The Government in Lao People's Democratic Republic
Laos is a single-party socialist republic and the only legal political party is the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP). Under the 1991 constitution, executive governmental power is held by a president, who is chosen by an elected National Assembly to serve a 5-year term. The head of state is President Choummaly Sayasone, who is also secretary-general (leader) of LPRP. He is also acts as the Commander in Chief of the country’s armed force. The National Assembly has 115 seats while the Central Committee is consisted of 55 members and 11 members are present in the Politburo. The assembly acts as a rubber stamp for the LPRP, approving all new laws, although the executive branch retains authority to issue binding decrees. Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh is the head of Council of Ministers, which is the highest executive organ in the Lao government.
The Laos Government has district judicial departments as well as provincial judicial department. The government also has divided the country into many administrative divisions that include 16 provinces, 1 municipality in Kumpang Nakon and 1 special zone in Xekong. The provinces are Attapu, Bokeo, Champasak, Phongsali, Bolikhamxai, Houphan, Louangphabang, Khammouan, Loung Namtha, Oudomxai, Savannakhet, and Vientiane Prefecture with Vientiane capital, Vientiane Province, Xaignabouli, and Xaisomboun.
