Religious beliefs in Sri Lanka

The locals of Sri Lanka and the culture they have are definitely influence by their religion, which is 70% of Buddhist teachings. Although that is the case, Sri Lanka is still one of the most multi-religious societies in Indian sub-continent with the remaining 30% divided to Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam.

The major religion in Sri Lanka, Buddhism, is practiced way back in the 3rd century B.C. during the reign of Ashoka. This Indian-transfer of religion made a significant role in establishing the Sinhalese kingdoms which taught Buddhism as the highest ethical and philosophical ways and means of then reigning Sinhalese culture and civilization in the land. Around 6th and 4th centuries, South Indians also brought Hinduism in the land. Chola seized the reigning kingdoms and constructed major Hindu Gods like Vishnu, Shiva, Kali, Ganesha and Skanda in the land.

About 7% of the total population in Sri Lanka practices Muslim cultures as brought about the Arab traders in the Middle East of the country. This started in 10th century AD. In the 16th century AD, Portuguese also brought Christianity. When Dutch ruled, Protestantism was also introduced.
