Why should you study in the USA?

The United States remains the premier education destination for students from around the world. And that for several good reasons. First, it offers high quality education. What can you study in the USA?

The variety of educational programs at American schools and universities are endless. Between three and four thousand public and private universities provide any degree program you could ever thing or imagine. You will be able to study just about any subject you choose. However, make sure you are prepared to meet the school's entry requirements.

We have grouped the type of studies and listed them below. Each will have its own general entry requirements, which will slightly differ from school to school. The best way to proceed is to decide what type of study to pursue, find several schools that teach it and find out their requirements. You can follow these links to find the type of school where you would like to study in the United States:

What is the process to study in the USA?

Start by deciding what you want to study, English, a university degree program, a graduate program, etc., and then find the American schools that offer your selected course or degree program. Look at their web site and search for their entry requirements, such as the level of education, language skills, entrance exams, or other requirements. Also look at the application deadlines to send in the application and required documents.

You will find that most schools will require a TOEFL score for undergraduate and graduate programs. Other exams they could require are SAT for undergraduate programs and the GRE or GMAT for masters and doctoral programs. Every school will have its own requirements, so make sure you find in their website their "Admissions requirements."

You must obtain a student visa

If you are going to the U.S. primarily for tourism, but want to take a short course of study of less than 18 hours per week, you may be able to do so on a visitor visa, but if your course of study is more than 18 hours a week, you will need a student visa.

Applying for a Student or Exchange Visitor Visa (from http://educationusa.state.gov/usvisa.htm )

In order to apply for a visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate, you must first have a SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System)-generated document (either an I-20 or DS-2019) issued by a U.S. college or university. You will be required to submit this form when you apply for a visa. The U.S. academic institution or program sponsor will provide you with the appropriate SEVIS-generated form only when you have been academically admitted to the institution or accepted as a participant in an exchange program. The institution or program sponsor will also send you additional information about applying for the appropriate visa, as well as other guidance about beginning your academic program in the United States . You will be required to provide financial evidence that shows you or your parents who are sponsoring you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition and living expenses during the period of your intended study. Once you have all the documentation that is required, you may apply for the visa, even if you do not intend to begin your program of study for several months. It is best to apply early for the visa to make sure that there is sufficient time for visa processing.

Student Housing

A major decision to make is where you will live while you study in the USA . Each institution has its own policy for housing. On campus and off campus housing are the options. The school will let you know the type of housing that is available and possibly send you a housing application form. Find out from your school which options are available before making a decision.

On campus housing

Most university housing consists of dormitories, called in the US "residence halls." Typically two students will share a room. Some universities may require undergraduate students to live in a dormitory on campus. Since most campuses have limited residence hall spaces, you should apply for it early. Some universities offer on campus apartments, a good option for married students with families.

Off campus housing

Many international students find other international students to share apartments. Rents will vary depending on the location.
