Human resources management (HRM) is the part of business administration that deals with the people who work in an organisation: how they are recruited, trained, paid, evaluated and retained, and how the employer complies with labour law. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes human resources managers as the people who plan, coordinate and direct the administrative functions of an organisation and oversee the recruiting, interviewing and hiring of new staff. Specialists, in turn, recruit and interview applicants and may handle compensation and benefits, training and employee relations.

A programme in HRM usually combines management subjects (strategy, organisational behaviour, finance) with recruitment and selection, training and development, pay and benefits, labour law, labour relations and negotiation, occupational health, and increasingly people analytics and HR information systems. In Spain and Latin America the legal side is strong: degrees often join labour relations and human resources in one title.

Qualifications and levels

  • Bachelor's degrees. According to the BLS, human resources specialists typically need a bachelor's degree in human resources, business or a related field. In Spain an official bachelor's degree (grado) has 240 ECTS credits; the usual title is the Grado en Relaciones Laborales y Recursos Humanos, taught for example at the Facultad de Ciencias del Trabajo of the Universidad de Cádiz.
  • Master's degrees. Official master's degrees in Spain have 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits. The official Máster en Dirección de Recursos Humanos of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid lasts a year and a half (90 ECTS), is taught in person and in Spanish and has 30 places. The Máster universitario en Dirección y Gestión de Recursos Humanos of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) is fully online, has 60 ECTS credits and is offered in Spanish and Catalan. In Guatemala, the Maestría en Gestión del Talento Humano of the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala lasts 18 months, with classes three evenings a week.
  • School-own master's programmes and MBAs. Many business schools offer their own HR master's programmes or an MBA with an HR specialisation. Ask the school what recognition the qualification has before enrolling.
  • Professional certifications. In the United Kingdom the CIPD, the professional body for HR, offers foundation, associate and advanced qualifications and accredits university programmes. In the United States the professional association SHRM awards the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certifications.

As a price reference, the UAM lists an approximate first-enrolment price of €4,087 for its master's (€7,601 for non-resident students from outside the EU), and the UOC gives a guide price of €2,900 for 60 ECTS credits studied full-time by EU students (prices on the universities' pages in October 2026, revised every year).

Where to study

SpainExchange lists 106 active schools for human resources management. The United States has 36, Spain 30 and the United Kingdom 16; Australia and Switzerland have three each, Canada and Italy two each. In Spain the list includes public universities such as the Universidad de Cádiz, the Universidad de Murcia and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the online UOC and business schools such as EU Business School Barcelona and ESDEN Business School. Elsewhere it includes Cranfield University, London Metropolitan University and York St John University in the United Kingdom, and the University of Washington, Vanderbilt University and Illinois State University in the United States.

Programmes at Spanish public universities are mostly taught in Spanish (or Catalan at the UOC), while several private business schools in Spain teach in English. Labour law is national, so a degree with a strong legal component prepares mainly for the country where it is taught. Check the language of instruction and the legal focus of each programme.

Careers

Graduates work as recruiters, HR generalists, training and development officers, compensation and benefits analysts, labour relations advisers and, with experience, HR managers or directors. The BLS notes that human resources managers are employed in nearly every industry; the UOC mentions companies, the public sector and non-profit organisations as employers.

Management posts come after some years in the field: the BLS indicates five years or more of related work experience for HR managers, and notes that some positions require a master's degree. For the United States it counts 939,700 jobs for human resources specialists and 224,900 for human resources managers in 2025, and projects growth of 6 percent for both occupations from 2025 to 2035. These figures apply to the United States only.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a degree in human resources to work in HR?

Not necessarily. According to the BLS, specialists typically need a bachelor's degree in human resources, business or a related field, and managers combine a bachelor's degree with several years of work experience.

How long does a master's in human resources take in Spain?

Official master's degrees have 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits. The UOC programme has 60 ECTS credits, which the university prices as one year of full-time study, and the UAM programme lasts a year and a half (90 ECTS).

Can I study human resources management online?

Yes. The UOC master's is taught 100% online, and several other schools in the directory teach at a distance. Check that the programme is official if you need it for further study or public employment.

Is an HR qualification valid in another country?

The academic degree can usually be presented abroad, but labour law and professional certifications differ by country. Ask the school what recognition its qualification has where you plan to work.
