Peking University has a well-deserved reputation for academic excellence and is China's highest-ranked institution of higher learning. Since its founding in 1898 the university has been a leading force for reform and development in China, and its alumni have played a predominate role in the economic, political and cultural life of the nation. Located in the northwestern corner of Beijing in what was once was the private garden of the imperial family, the 700 acre college campus is one of the most beautiful academic settings in the world. As students at Peking University, participants in the program are entitled to use all of the facilities on campus, including the library, gymnasiums, swiming pool, tennis courts, fitness center and scores of campus dining halls.
Chinese Language Classes
Each year over two thousand overseas students from more than sixty countries attend classes at Peking University. While some are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate degree programs, most come to the university for Chinese language instruction. Peking University's Chinese Language Center offers many levels of instruction from beginning through advanced. The curriculum follows standards articulated by the National Committee on the Teaching of Chinese as a Second Language and offers certification at various levels through the HSK: China's equivalent of the TOEFL. The Center employs a language faculty of 42 full-time professionals engaged in teaching and research. All are nationally certified teachers of Chinese as a Second Language and many are leading scholars in the field.
Students attending the Summer Chinese Language Program will be evaluated by the faculty of the Chinese Language Center and placed in an appropriate class according to their abilities in four separate skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students will attend 20 hours of class each week for six weeks for a total of 120 hours of classroom instruction. Classes are held from 8:00 to 12:00 Monday through Friday. The curriculum is structured by two integrated classes: Kouyu: which emphasizes speaking and listening skills, and Hanyu: which develops reading and writing abilities. Each class is equivalent to one semester course at a U.S. college or university. Students will be continually evaluated during the six-weeks of instruction and issued an accredited transcript upon successful completion of the language program
