Study in Pago Pago, American Samoa

Study in Pago Pago, American Samoa

Pago Pago may not be written on a traditional list of tropical tourist destinations, but this American Samoan city surpasses even humid hotspots like the Bahamas. On a Pacific island nearly untouched by civilization, Pago Pago is the capital, economic hub, industrial center and just about everything else to American Samoa. In a city that resembles more of a gorgeous port-town from a postcard, Pago Pago has begun to better itself through the offering of advanced education.

Lost in the midst of the Pacific Ocean, Pago Pago is a forgotten isle rarely (if ever) associated with higher education. This may be due in part to the limited institutions on the island itself. In fact, there is unfortunately only one main institute of higher education on the entire island. The American Samoa Community College is a new addition to a city that hardly cares for the fast-paced, industrial nightmare of other major metropolises. Surrounded by lush, green mountains and pristine bays, this community college offers associate degrees, proficiency certificates and special development programs in a limited number of studies.

Though their educational choices may be limited, students will not be disappointed in Pago Pago. Surfing, swimming, boating, fishing and a huge number of other water sports await the adventurous just off the coast. Students can even learn the cultural ways by mingling with laid-back locals and visiting the Samoan history museum. Nature-lovers will be delighted by the trails (both charted and uncharted) they can blaze across the beautiful, hardly-inhabited island, and all students will enjoy the authentic seafood-centered cuisine.

Other considerations for future students of Pago Pago include:
  • Majority of courses taught in English.
  • High risk for tropical storms and cyclones.

Major Fields of Study in Pago Pago

Pago Pago only has one real institute of higher learning. Unfortunately, this means the fields of study on this tiny Pacific island are extremely limited. Counting all certificate, associate, training and proficiency programs, nearly everything that can be studied on the island is listed below.
  • English, language and literature
  • Teaching, education and physical education
  • Agriculture and life science
  • Business
  • Criminal justice
  • Social science
  • Trades and technology
  • Fine arts
  • Health, nursing and human service
  • Life planning
  • Samoan studies
  • Mathematics

Students can also be trained in an army reserve program that prepares them for a career in military life. Due to the location of Pago Pago, students interested in Samoan studies are highly advised to study at this cultural center point.

Schools of Pago Pago

The American Samoa Community College offers a limited, but still relatively diverse course set to students, offering programs in business, fine arts and other areas. The college offers associate degree, certificates and other recognitions of achievement. It is highly involved in the community through student support services, teacher training and personal development programs. While not located in the midst of Pago Pago, it is the closest and so far only, opportunity for higher education on American Samoa.
