Law Studies in Mauritius

Are you a law student who has always dreamed of studying abroad in a foreign country?  Have you considered the beautiful country of Mauritius as a potential study abroad locale?  If so, you may find the following information quite useful.

The breathtaking island nation of Mauritius, officially known as the Republic of Mauritius or the République de Maurice in French, is situated in the Indian Ocean about 1,200 miles (2,000 km) off the southeast coast of the African continent. The territory of the country includes the islands of Mauritius, Rodrigues (350 miles east of the principal island), the islands of Agalega and the archipelago Saint Brandon. Mauritius also claims sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, situated 800 mi to the northeast of Mauritius. However, that sovereignty has been challenged by the United Kingdom, which excised the archipelago from Mauritian territory prior to Mauritius' independence and gradually depopulated it. The islands of Mauritius, Rodrigues and Réunion, (110 miles to the southwest), form part of the Mascarene Islands. The total area of Mauritius is roughly 1300 square miles.  Its capital and largest city is Port Louis.

When Portuguese explorers first discovered Mauritius in 1507 they found no indigenous population.  The Dutch later settled the island in 1638, only to abandon it completely in 1710. Five years later, the island became a French colony and was renamed Isle de France. The British took control of Mauritius in 1810 during the Napoleonic Wars, and the country remained under British rule until it became an independent Commonwealth realm on March 12, 1968 and a republic within the Commonwealth March 12, 1992.

Mauritius is a multiethnic and multicultural country, and most of the population speaks two or more of the four languages spoken there; languages that include English, French, Creole and a variety of Asian languages. The government system of the country is organized and closely modeled after the Westminster parliamentary system of governemtn. Mauritius is highly ranked in various international indexes for democracy and for economic and political freedom.

Some of the courses students can expect to encounter while studying law in Mauritius include:
  • Contracts

These courses lay the groundwork for a long and rewarding career in the legal profession and give students an insight into the country’s court and criminal justice system.

Once students successfully complete all of the required coursework, they are awarded a Doctor of Law degree.  However, before they are permitted to practice law they must first sit for and pass the National Law School Exam in the country in which they plan to pursue their career.
