Studies & Degrees in Media Technology

Media technology is the engineering behind digital media: the software and hardware that create, process, store and deliver images, sound, video, games and interactive experiences. It sits where computer science meets design and the arts. Students learn to program, and they apply that skill to computer graphics, animation, audio and music technology, image and video processing, and the ways people interact with screens, devices and virtual environments.

Programmes differ in emphasis. Some are computer science degrees with a media focus; others bring engineers and artists together in one department. The University of California, Santa Barbara, describes its Media Arts and Technology programme as one that "fuses emergent media, computer science, engineering, electronic music and digital art research, practice, production, and theory".

Qualifications and levels

  • Bachelor's level. Media technology is rarely a first degree under that exact name. Most students start with a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, digital media or design and specialise later. Community colleges in the United States offer two-year associate degrees in media-related technology.
  • Master's degrees. The Game and Media Technology programme of Utrecht University is a two-year, research-oriented master's of 120 EC (European credits; the university counts 28 hours of work per credit). It leads to an MSc in computer science (Informatica), is taught full-time in English and starts in February and September. The curriculum has a course part of 76 EC, a research part of 40 EC that includes the thesis, and a 4 EC colloquium. Electives include multimedia retrieval, advanced graphics, geometric algorithms, deep learning, and sound and music technology. The programme is accredited by the NVAO, the Dutch-Flemish accreditation organisation.
  • Research programmes. At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), students join the Media Lab through the Program in Media Arts and Sciences, which belongs to the School of Architecture and Planning. It has over 200 graduate students, accepts approximately 50 master's and PhD candidates each year from backgrounds that range from computer science to psychology, architecture and music, and offers about 30 graduate courses. Media Arts and Technology at UC Santa Barbara is also a graduate programme, with MSc and PhD students, created by faculty of the College of Engineering and the College of Letters and Science.

Where to study media technology

SpainExchange lists six active schools for media technology: three in the United States and one each in the Netherlands, Austria and Iraq. The US schools are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, the University of California Santa Barbara and County College of Morris, a community college in New Jersey. In Europe the list has Utrecht University, and in Iraq the University of Thi-Qar in Nasiriyah.

The programmes named here are taught in English. Costs vary widely between countries. Utrecht University publishes its fees for the 2026-27 academic year: €2,694 (the statutory fee) for Dutch and other EU/EEA students and €25,306 (the institutional fee) for students from outside the EU/EEA. US universities set their own tuition and funding rules for each graduate programme, so check the admissions pages; UC Santa Barbara, for example, is taking applications for the 2027-28 academic year.

Careers

Graduates work as software developers for games, graphics, audio and video, as interaction and digital designers, as technical artists in animation and visual effects, and in research laboratories. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not report on media technology as a single occupation, but two of its groups are close to it. Web developers and digital designers held 220,100 jobs in 2025, and employment is projected to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035; educational requirements range from a high school diploma to a bachelor's degree. Special effects artists and animators held 51,900 jobs in 2025, with little or no change projected to 2035; they typically need a bachelor's degree in computer graphics, art or a related field. A research master's also prepares for a PhD.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know how to program to study media technology?

For master's programmes, generally yes. The programme in Utrecht leads to an MSc in computer science, and its courses include graphics, algorithms and deep learning. Programmes that mix art and engineering, such as those at MIT and UC Santa Barbara, take students from a wider range of backgrounds.

How long does a master's in media technology take?

The Game and Media Technology master's at Utrecht University takes two years of full-time study (120 EC), of which 40 EC are research.

How much does it cost to study media technology in the Netherlands?

At Utrecht University the 2026-27 fee is €2,694 for EU/EEA students and €25,306 for students from outside the EU/EEA.

Is media technology the same as media studies?

No. Media studies and communication look at media content, audiences and the industry. Media technology is a technical subject about building the tools and systems, and it is usually taught in computer science or engineering departments.
