Segobriga Archaeological Park, a prominent city during the Roman Empire in Spain

In Segobriga's archaeological park, we find what was a prominent city during the Roman Empire in Spain. Segobriga was located near the existing town of Saelices in the province of Cuenca. Segobriga is today one of the most important archeological sites of the Spanish "Meseta.

Its origins are probably Celtic, but it had its historic importance during the Roman times. Because of its location in the center of Spain, Segobriga became the joining point of the Spanish Roman routes and the administrative center of a great agricultural and mining region. The area lost importance and was abandoned after the Islamic invasion of Spain in the 8th century.

At Segobriga's Archeological Park, the visitor can see from the Roman times: the amphitheater, theater, city walls and its gates, the forum and baths.

The Amphitheatre, 75 meters long in an irregular elliptic shape, is the biggest monument of Segobriga. It had capacity for an audience of 5,500.

The Theatre was built in the first century. The orchestra with three tiers of honor places for authorities is preserved as well as tiers of seats for the spectators divided into sections according to their social classes. The upper cavea was built on the city wall through a vault used as street.

The city was surrounded by a wall of 1300 meters. It had several gates, of which the main gate allowed direct access to the Forum.

The Forum was a rectangular space surrounded by a colonnade supported by large columns. It was the most important social and political center of Segobriga.

The monumental baths were built not only for hygienic reasons but social and business as well. At the bath leisure time was spent and business were conducted.

At Segobriga's Archeological Park one can also observe the origins of the city at the summit of the hill where is located, the Acropolis, at the location of a former Celt-Iberian fortress. There is also a necropolis and a Visigoth basilica.
