The shelter is managed entirely by women and funded by private donations and has a volunteer staff that works there and at the day care facilities; both places are managed by a Volunteer Coordinator (the volunteer with the most experience).
Work includes assisting in day care or in after school tutoring and activities for the children. Also you can help children with their homework after and before their school. You could also organize recreational and creative activities for the children and their mothers. Furthermore there is the possibility to help out at the kitchen, do plumbing, electrician, carpentry or construction work.

Description:
Volunteers who join this programme have the unique opportunity of being immersed in one of several indigenous communities situated near Antigua Guatemala. Surrounded by volcanoes and mountain lakes, this old Spanish Colonial town allows Volunteers to learn or improve their Spanish, while travelling to nearby rural areas for their project work. GVI, along with leaders of the indigenous communities, have developed schools to assist children who otherwise would not have the opportunity of any formal education. Included in the fee is a US$100 donation per month worked, the use of which is decided upon by each individual Volunteer.
Two weeks of one on one Spanish classes (based on skill level) are included in the price and are highly recommended for those Volunteers with no previous Spanish experience or those who want to brush up on their Spanish language! Those who choose to take Spanish will Volunteer on their projects in the afternoons. After these two weeks, Volunteers will then work full-time at the project.
Early on in your stay, you will spend a weekend with other GVI Volunteers mountain biking to Lake Atitlan, a beautiful volcanic lake. Once there you will hike, kayak and stay in a majestic lakeside hotel.
Included in your fee is one scholarship for a child to attend school for one year. Education is not free in Guatemala and GVI provides scholarships for the Indigenous children we teach to be able to attend the local school as well as attending our school. In 2006, thanks to volunteer contributions, we are sending over 175 children to the national school, as well as our own.
