New Zealand has mild temperatures, high rainfall and lots of sunshine. One of the greatest advantages of New Zealand is that all of these different landscapes, environments and ecosystems are so close to each other. It is easy to understand why this amazing land was used as the backdrop of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. ...
Conservation volunteers will be hands on people who love the outdoors. You should be in good health and reasonably fit. Be prepared to take part to the best of your ability and work well in a team. You must be prepared for some hard physical work, Conservation volunteers need to be willing to get stuck in and get their hands dirty. You will need to be flexible and be prepared to move around the country and stay in various types of accommodation. Conservation is the priority and you must be willing to go where you are needed.
Your role as a volunteer:
There are a variety of conservation projects and the nature of work will vary depending on the time of year you visit. Typical projects include: creation of walking paths, trail maintenance, weed removal as well as other ad-hoc activities and manual labour jobs to support the conservation projects.

The area around Auckland has become something of a playground for the outdoors-types that abound in New Zealand's second city. Volunteers are needed to work alongside an experienced conservation charity, helping to protect local habitats and ensure the long term sustainability of this stunning region. You'll be working in areas such at Hamlins Hill and the spectacular Hunua Ranges, so you'll not only be making a lasting contribution to vital conservation efforts but you'll be spending time in some of the most beautiful areas in the southern hemisphere. Starting from Auckland, volunteers may be placed on projects anywhere on the North Island, and occasionally also on the South Island. The Maori Culture program is a chance for you to learn in-depth about the fascinating indigenous people of New Zealand, the Maori. You will also be able to volunteer in various conservation projects. The program starts with a two-week course on Maori culture at the Wellington Business School. It includes among other things, trips to places of interest as well as a lesson in the Maori language. The course takes 22 hours of trips and classes finish with two full days and one night on a Marae, which is a Maori meeting place.
After finishing the Maori course, you will be able to choose a volunteer project. You may choose between environmental/forest and animal/wildlife conservation. You can volunteer for a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of eight weeks. The program includes airport pick-up and an orientation meeting, accommodation, free use of PC’s and Internet while at Wellington Business School and ongoing assistance and support.
