Nowhere boasts the number of world-class destinations in quite such close proximity as Europe. With dozens of the world’s greatest cities all within a couple of hours of each other it’s easy for any student to travel between them and soak up the wealth of culture on hand. It doesn’t need to cost a fortune either, with plenty of budget airlines flying directly between many of the cities. Whether you’re on a gap year or just your summer holidays, it’s time you ventured into the heart of Europe and discovered its joys for yourself. Here are five places to start.
Barcelona
The Catalan capital is one of Europe’s most glittering jewels. With world-class architecture adorning its wide avenues and city squares, sites like Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia and La Pedrera continue to attract visitors from all over. If you fancy something else beyond gazing up at the buildings, why not take a trip down famed thoroughfare Las Ramblas, or take a walk up Montjuic hill for the majestic views below. Few cities reward a wander quite like Barcelona.
Prague
Offering the perfect blend of beauty, history, and budget-friendly fun, Prague is a must for any student traveller. With cheaper beer than anywhere in north or western Europe, the Czech’s are certainly proud of their lager. If you’re not in the mood for a glass or two, take in some of the gothic sites like the St Vitus Cathedral or the 14th century Charles Bridge. Don’t forget to visit the world-famous Astronomical Clock either.
Rome
The Eternal City remains one of the world’s most evocative destinations. The centre of European culture for aeons, the Italian capital boasts more historical treasures than most entire countries can claim. Sites like the Colosseum and the Pantheon attract visitors in their millions, but it’s the countless meandering lanes and charming piazzas that offer the real taste of Rome, and the real smell of espresso!
Paris
Whether sitting in a café by the Seine, taking a trip up tour Eiffel, or a having a walk through Montmartre, Paris has no shortage of charms. The combination of architecture, food, romance, and culture results in a city without compare. While it isn’t the cheapest, it is one of Europe’s most rewarding destinations. And if you don’t want to deal with the queues for the blockbuster attractions like the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower, then just wander through the countless shops and boutiques or find a spot for a little people watching.
Lisbon
Few places offer as perfect a mix of unpretentiousness and style as the Portuguese capital. One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, don’t miss a chance to scale one Lisbon’s seven hills and take in the undulating views of the copper-coloured roofs below. Learn about the country’s seafaring history and its Age of Discovery with a trip to Torre de Belem. Alternatively, head to the nearby beaches of Portinho da Arrabiba or Praia da Adraga and catch some rays in the Atlantic sun.
