The University of Baghdad (UOB) is an institution of higher education, established in 1067. It is the largest university in Iraq and the second largest Arab university. The school is a growing one in terms of advancements and strives to keep integrating technology into its educational processes. Programs are offered in many different fields, including Dentistry, Sciences, Law, Engineering, Pharmacy, Languages, and others. The occupation of Iraq has greatly affected the institution, though. There are classes in which 90% of students have dropped out.

Public and private universities, private colleges and technical institutes, offer higher education in Iraq. Higher education is under control of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHSR). Arabic is the primary language used as a medium of instruction in all institutions. Kurdish is used in Kurdish regions alone. University level education in Iraq includes various programs that prepare students to acquire the Master and Doctorate degrees or professional qualifications. The MOHSR also oversees the administration of higher education institutes in the Kurdistan areas, in Iraq. Higher education in Iraq is based on academic study and research. The higher education institutions are largely funded by the state. However, the number of private universities in Iraq is steadily increasing, and these universities are not funded by the state.
Bachelor’s Degree in Iraq
Undergraduate education is offered at various universities in Iraq. It usually takes three to four years full time study or eight semesters to complete the bachelor’s program. The exceptions to this include degrees in architecture, medicine and dentistry, which require a longer period, usually five or six years. Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of engineering, Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Law are the most common undergraduate degree programs offered. Arabic and English are mandatory subjects in universities in Iraq. Students, who have obtained the secondary education school leaving certificate can apply for a bachelor’s degree program in Iraq.
Technical colleges in Iraq are administered by the Baghdad based Foundation of Technical Institutes. Some of the new technical colleges that were founded in the academic year 2001-02 also offer 4 year Bachelor’s degree programs like BA and BSC. Medical, agriculture, administration, art and technology are the fields specialized at technical colleges in Iraq.
The main difference between the programs offered by traditional universities and new technical colleges in Iraq is that the courses offered by the former are theoretical, whereas the courses offered by the latter are more practical.
Master’s Degree in Iraq
Students who wish to pursue a master’s degree need to have completed a bachelor’s degree in the respective subject with at least 65 percent. One year of full time study, following the Bachelor’s degree, leads to a Master’s degree in Iraq. Master’s students are assessed by an examination and a short thesis.
Additionally, MPhil is also a popular master’s degree in Iraq, which is a two or more year research program.
MPhil students need to submit a thesis of 50,000 to 70,000 words. Students also need to get a score of 70 percent or above, with at least 60 percent in each subject to graduate.
Higher diplomas are awarded in medical fields, and admission to these programs is based on the student’s score at the undergraduate level. A two-year post graduate higher diploma is offered by some specialized institutes in Iraq.
