How does Semester at Sea work?

Semester at Sea offers: A unique study abroad experience, different from all others. Unlike traditional study abroad programs, Semester at Sea takes place on a 1,000-passenger ship and sails to 10+ countries on each voyage. A program that connects students and lifelong learners from around the world.

Semester at Sea gives you a taste of the entire globe as you travel more than 25,000 nautical miles, through 4 continents, to as many as 12 off-the-beaten-path international destinations.

How hard is it to get into Semester at Sea?

Semester at Sea requires an official copy of your high school transcript. We give preference to students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher out of 4.0. For students from schools with grading systems that do not use a 4.0 grading scale, our team will complete a GPA conversion as part of the review process.

Can you drink alcohol on Semester at Sea?

Students are prohibited from bringing alcohol onboard the vessel. Also disallowed are empty souvenir bottles. Alcohol beverages are available for purchase onboard the vessel on designated sea days.

How do people afford Semester at Sea?

If you are worried about cost, Semester at Sea has their own scholarships you can apply for and the pell grant match! Check with your home college as well to see if their scholarships can be applied towards the program. Semester at Sea is possible for students who come from a low income background!

Is food free on Semester at Sea?

Crew gratuities ($2 per day) are included with your program fees. All meals aboard the ship are included — even on days in port. Meals are served buffet-style three times a day.

Can you work while on Semester at Sea?

Students are expected to work two hours a day while at sea, and there will be no work expectations while in port. Grants are awarded in the amount of $4,000, and students are only eligible to apply for one position per voyage.

How much WIFI do you get on Semester at Sea?

The MV World Odyssey is equipped with a satellite dish that allows Internet access while at sea in most parts of the world. All students will have the Starter 50 Internet package, which includes a specified allotment of megabytes usage per day.

It is expected that most participants will have a specific individual in mind to live with and mutual roommate requests will be honored when possible, regardless of gender, as long as both parties are requesting the same cabin type.
