Study, Work or Volunteer in New Zealand

New Zealand is located in the south-western Pacific. It has 2 main islands – the North Island and the South Island. Its government is under a parliament democratic and constitutional monarchy framework. The current head of state is HM Queen Elizabeth II while the current governor-general and prime minister are Anand Satyanand and Helen Clark respectively. English is the primary language and the capital city is Wellington.

Migrants from Polynesia are the earliest settlers of New Zealand. In September 26, 1907, New Zealand was declared a separate territory from the United Kingdom. The country’s main industries are food processing, transportation and machinery equipment, textiles, mining, and tourism. New Zealand’s GDP based on 2008 IMF estimate is US$117.7 billion. The quality of life in the country is one of the highest in the world signifying a vigorous and stable economy. The World Bank lately distinguished New Zealand as the world’s most business-friendly country.

The modern cultures of New Zealand derived mostly form Britain with some other influences from Australia, America, and Māori cultures. The world’s biggest Polynesian festival, the Pasifika, is held every year in Auckland. Music and food of New Zealand have also “Western” influences. The rubgy union remains as unofficial sport of the country. Other popular sports include cricket, bowls, soccer, netball, tennis, and golf.
